The City of Tallahassee has received $1 million in federal Brownfields grant funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency, and has been very active with testing and cleanup projects along the Gaines Street Corridor.
In accordance with the Gaines Street Corridor Brownfields Cleanup Grant, the City is pleased to present for public comment the following documents:

Crews have been busy during the past two weeks. To see what the area currently looks like, check out Facebook.com/GainesStreet. New project photos were posted on March 6. Here is some of what crews have accomplished.
- The duct banks on the south side of the street are done.
- The seating walls are nearly complete. The coping (top part) is currently being installed.
- The base has been laid for the road between Macomb and Railroad.
- Sidewalk construction on the south side is nearly finished. There is a section left to do just east of St. Michael's Pub, and the driveway for St. Michael's also needs to be completed. Both will be done soon, most likely this week.
- Sunoco's new driveway has been poured, and crews are currently working on completing sidewalks between there and Railroad.
Over the next two weeks, the intersection and south lane of the roadway just west of Railroad will be milled. Then, the old road there will be removed, and the new base will be laid. Once that is complete, the first rise (or structural layer) of the new roadway can be put down. The final, top layer of asphalt will be completed at a later date to give a uniform look to the road and to keep it from being tarnished during the remainder of construction. After the first rise is laid, you may notice about an inch of height difference between the road and the curb. The second rise (final, top layer) will fill that in.
Estimates put construction about 2-3 weeks away from switching to the north lanes in this section. We will provide updates as that gets closer. When the switch occurs, What's The Point?, Euphoria Tattoos and Avant Garb will begin using their back doors for access. All the shops in the construction zone are open.
We provide these updates on a bi-weekly basis. They are emailed out to the Gaines Street email subscription group, which you can sign up for at http://www.411notify.com/tallahassee, if you haven't already.
You can also stay up-to-date by liking the Gaines Street Facebook page or following the project on Twitter @GainesStreet. For more information, please call 891-8533.

January 13, 2012
On January 16, construction resumed on the Gaines Street project. We appreciate your continued patience as we work to complete this transformation. We hope the new street lights, wider sidewalks and other distinguishing features that are now in place help convey the vision for the remainder of the street.
To safely and effectively construct Phase II of the project, the traffic pattern has once again been changed. Between Macomb Street and Woodward Avenue, Gaines Street will temporarily be a one-way, westbound street. Eastbound traffic is being detoured at Woodward Ave. to St. Augustine Street.
Please note that businesses on Gaines Street remain open and need your continued patronage during construction. For help navigating the area, please use the map below. Access to businesses will be maintained to the best extent possible.
