Facts on Local Homelessness
The Tallahassee Coalition for the Homeless conducts "street count" surveys that gather information from agencies, the public school system, shelters and homeless camps. The count represents only a one-day "snapshot" of homelessness; 3,000 – 4,000 people each year are estimated to be homeless in Tallahassee.
- In 2005, 739 individuals were identified; 54% were adults, 23% were veterans and 46% were children.
- People who had some college education or college degree were 32% of those surveyed.
- 26% of survey respondents are chronically homeless; 46% have been homeless for over one year.
- The number of children in the homeless population is increasing.
- Over a 1,000 people are estimated to be homeless everyday in the Big Bend Area.
