TPD: Becoming a Member - FAQ

Q. Can I work as a Dispatcher part-time or while I am going to school?
A. This is very difficult unless you get through the training phases before you resume school.  All permanent positions in this section are full-time.

Q. What kind of typing is required for Dispatchers?
A. As a Dispatcher you will be trained to do several things: answer 911 calls, operate the teletype, fire dispatch, etc. During most of these duties it will be your responsibility to type information into a computer system while speaking over the phone or radio.

Q. Must I be certified in law enforcement to be hired into a Police Officer position?
A.  The Tallahassee Police Department does hire non-certified individuals and sponsors them in the Law Enforcement Academy. These individuals are hired as Trainees and receive 5% below the minimum pay range.

Q.  How often are Law Enforcement Academy classes available?
A.  The Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy usually starts classes in January and July.

Q. If I have gotten a speeding ticket recently, will that disqualify me for a Police Officer position?
A. Per City policy, applicants are not eligible for hire if they have received a citation for a moving violation within the past six months. In addition, the Police Department conducts a check of the applicants' driving histories over the past seven years as part of the background investigation process.

Q. If I am a certified law enforcement officer in another state, what do I need to qualify for a position in Florida?
A. You must first meet all the qualifications for the position, please note that experience cannot substitute for education. If you do meet the qualifications, you may apply as a non-certified applicant or you can contact one of the academies in the state that offer a review process and cross-over training.  You may qualify for the Police Officer Lateral Hire Program.

Q. Is it possible to become a part-time Reserve Police Officer while finishing college or working elsewhere?
A. It is possible to work part-time as a Reserve Police Officer, but the qualifications and hiring process are identical and once hired the first phase of training is full time.

Q. Can I use my G.I. Bill benefits?
A. Yes.  Take a look at the G.I. Bill - Public Safety Communications Officer On-the-Job Training Program
