Schools on Solar Program

Oak Ridge Solar Thermal PanelsThe Schools on Solar program is a partnership between Your Own Utilities and the Leon County School District to install solar PV and thermal systems at local schools. These systems are equipped with a data acquisition system that displays their performance and other valuable solar data on a web portal that can be used by students or the general public.

The City of Tallahassee paid for the initial installations and future systems will be funded by contributions from City of Tallahassee utility customers who choose to make a one time or monthly contribution, of any amount, to be billed on their utility bill. Funds collected for this program will be used to purchase class room materials, provide teacher training on solar and renewable energy and build additional systems.

Solar panels at Trousdell Aquatic CenterSolar Panels at Trousdell Aquatic Center

The 10 Kilowatt Photovoltaic (PV) solar electric generation system located at the Trousdell Gymnastic and Aquatic Center on John Knox Road, provides up to 14,000 kWh of electric power a year, enough to run the average 1500 sq. ft. home in Tallahassee. The PV System is "grid connected", providing power for general distribution to the rest of Tallahassee when not being used at the Aquatic Center. The system joins the 18kW solar system at the Capital Center Office Complex and the 12 megawatt (maximum, 3mW average) C. H. Corn Hydroelectric Plant as sources of clean, renewable energy for Tallahassee.

Solar thermal devices use direct heat from the sun, concentrating it in some manner to produce heat at useful temperatures. At City Hall, this roof mounted system provides heat for hot water.

Loans for solar water heaters are available as part of our loan program for energy efficiency. Call Energy Services at 891-4YOU (4968) for more information.
