CFL Partnership Passes Savings to Consumer

Get Energy Smart Plus, Save Energy, Save Water, Save MoneyCompact Fluorescent Lights (CFL's) have revolutionized energy-efficient lighting. CFL's are simply miniature versions of full-sized fluorescent lamps. A coiled design allows them to be used in place of standard incandescent light bulbs. CFL's screw into standard sockets, and give off light that's color-balanced to look like common incandescent bulbs. More information on CFL's. Proper recycling and disposal of CFL's.

Compact Fluorescent Light BulbPartnership Passes Savings to Consumer

While the price of everything from food to fuel is going up these days, citizens in Tallahassee can still find a bargain thanks to a partnership between the City, Sam's Club and GE.

The Tallahassee Sam's Club has agreed to allow non-club members the opportunity to buy Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs at the member price.

Sam's will allow non-members entry into their store on Capital Circle Southeast to purchase the CFLs. However, if a patron wants to purchase more than the CFLs, they need to check with store management on their options.

The City of Tallahassee has made an agreement with GE and Sam's Club to discount 8-packs of 13 watt (60 watt equivalent) compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) as part of the City's Energy Smart Plus programs. The 8-packs, available at Sam's Club, will be discounted from the retail price of $10.86 to $9.86. The sale kicks off June 10 and will last until all 8,640 packs have been sold.

In keeping with its green initiative, the City is also partnering with Sam's Club to place a centralized co-mingle recycling center for the public at their location, where customers can drop off paper, plastic bottles, jars and aluminum cans. A separate container, to be provided by Leon County's Solid Waste Division, is being considered to safely collect used CFL's for recycling, which will also be located at Sam's Club at a later date.

"The City is aggressively promoting energy efficiency with the Energy Smart Plus program. This partnership really puts the spotlight on savings: saving energy and saving money," said David Byrne, director of Energy Services for the City.

The discounted CFL's are part of the City's larger Energy Smart Plus program which includes rebates for Energy Star appliances, natural gas appliances and several other money and energy saving programs.
