Taylor Energy Center

Taylor Energy Center (formerly the North Florida Power Project)On July 3, the Taylor Energy Center announced plans to suspend permitting activities while participating in a recently announced state dialogue on Florida's energy future.

The suspension will allow the utilities time to assess how best to meet their customers' electricity needs in ways consistent with growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions. A final decision must be confirmed by the governing boards for the four municipal electric utilities that are working together on this project.

Our Commitment

Protecting the environment is part of the City's values and mission. Here are just a few recent examples:

  • Tallahassee's Purdom Unit 8 generating unit uses treated wastewater from St. Marks, and recycles the water so that it doesn't end up in a nearby river.
  • The National Arbor Day Society has named Tallahassee a Tree City USA for 13 years.
  • The City Commission has committed millions of dollars to helping residents reduce energy consumption with everything from low-cost loans and upgraded heating and air conditioning systems, to free home ceiling insulation and window replacement for low-income residents and free home energy audits.
  • The Electric Utility has invested in solar demonstration and hydroelectric projects. In fact, the City receives a portion of its power from the Lake Talquin hydroelectric dam, one of only two hydroelectric projects in Florida.
  • The City's Parks & Recreation Department has been named the best in America, based partly on its commitment to the environment.
  • Tallahassee was recently awarded the Outstanding City Program award from Recycle Florida Today, Inc., in recognition of innovative recycling programs implemented throughout many City departments.
  • The Department Of Environmental Protection has awarded the City of Tallahassee the 1st place award for Superior Accomplishment in Environmental Stewardship for three years in a row.
