Outstanding Environmental Award
Due
to proactive and comprehensive environmental efforts by Your Own Utilities
and other City departments, the City of Tallahassee recently won the Outstanding
City Program (Urban) award from Recycle Florida
Today, Inc. The award was
announced during the Recycle Florida Today conference held in early June
in Palm Beach Gardens.
The award, researched and coordinated by John Powell with the Utility Business and Customer Services Department , recognized a number of recycling and reuse programs coordinated by Your Own Utilities, as well as other City environmental efforts. The projects include the residential recycling program administered by Solid Waste Services, which resulted in 13,858 tons of recycled materials in 2004.
Other recycling programs recognized in the award included a Water Utility biosolids recycling system and the reuse of water to cool the Electric Utility's Purdom Generating Station in St. Marks. The award also noted an automotive repair environmental compliance program used by the City's Fleet Management Department and the Green Energy program, Green for You, where customers may choose electricity generated from renewable sources (wind, solar, etc.).
